Mission Statement:
Founded as the Black Student Union in 1967, but changing its name to Igwebuike in 1985 after a massive movement to create the Multi-Cultural Center, this organization aims to promote awareness of African-American issues and provides numerous social and educational activities as well as support for students. The word "Igwebuike" is Igbo for "In Unity There Is Strength." This Unity is a major goal of Igwebuike today. Other goals of Igwebuike are: to set good examples for one another, as well as for the African-American community; recruit both current students (for Igwebuike) and prospective freshmen (to enhance future community); and to retain our members.
At the beginning of each academic year, the members of Igwebuike decide on a theme. This year, the theme is "Legendary Legacy." Members are dedicated to making their respective communities aware of current African-American issues, whether that be the campus community, the greater Santa Clara community, or their own home communities. In doing so, they will present a united front, which was the basis of this organization's founding.
